Dave Penney and his Doncaster side would have been delighted to come away from Broadhall Way with all three points.
The hosts dominated the first hour of the match but the Yorkshire side fought back well to win after going two goals down with a late late Paul Barnes toe poke.
It all started very differently though. Stevenage Borough, top of the current form table, started brightly and could have been ahead after just 20 seconds.
A fine cross by Steve Watson was met by the ahead of Danny Carroll just six yards from goal but Doncaster keeper Stuart Nelson did well to push the ball round the post.
Just one minute later Steve Watson once again was the provider for striker Dino Maamria to lob the keeper with a deft chip that fell into the empty net.
Constant pressure from Stevenage in the opening 15 minutes of the game continued when Jamie Cook chipped the ball to the far post for Watson to chip back over the head of the keeper, but with Carroll waiting to convert, defender Mark Albrighton cleared the ball for a corner.
Doncaster's best and first chance fell on 30 minutes to the lively Tristram Whitman. He was in acres of space just ten yards from goal and would have been disappointed to see his blast finish up over the scoreboard.
The second goal for Boro duly arrived on 36 minutes. A well-worked free-kick, 20 yards from goal, was knocked to the right for Simon Wormull to place his shot into the bottom left-hand corner of Nelson's goal.
Doncaster hit back after the interval and on the hour mark Francis Tierney gathered the ball ten yards in from the left touchline and 25 yards from goal.
His long looping shot caught keeper Westhead off his line and dipped into the far corner.
Five minutes later and the game exploded into life when a tussle between the combative Barnes and Watson erupted into a pushing match which resulted in yellow cards all round but could easily have seen both players walk from the pitch.
With Doncaster looking to get back into things and the last few minutes, a long pass from Tierney was missed by the Boro defence and Barnes ran through one-on-one with Westhead.
However, his strong cross-field shot was well saved.
Doncaster continued to pile on the pressure and they were finally rewarded with only nine minutes to go.
A superb solo effort by Whitman saw him fire a 20-yards shot home after a fine mazy run.
Barnes missed another good chance while at the other end Gary Holloway found Anthony Elding who cut inside and let go with a screamer which just went over the crossbar.
With the final move of the game Doncaster Barnes toe-poked a shot over the line to complete a fine comeback.
