Matt Godden effort enough as Stevenage edge Accrington

Matt Godden scored the winning goal as Stevenage overcame Accrington Stanley 1-0 to make it three League Two away wins on the bounce.

Stanley dominated the first half but could not take one of their chances as the persistent rain made it tricky.

Jordan Clark raced into the area in the early minutes with his shot punched away by keeper Jamie Jones.

Stanley defender Zac Vyner came close with a 20-yard effort on 25 minutes while Shay McCartan went on a mazy run into the area with his final shot deflected onto the roof of the net on 28 minutes.

On the stroke of half-time Omar Beckles raced onto the end of a Sean McConville corner but his powerful header went just over the bar.

Stevenage offered little in terms of chances but the pace of Harry McKirdy was giving the home defence something to think about.

And it was the visitors who bossed the second half with Dale Gorman testing Elliot Parish in the early stages.

There were several goalmouth scrambles with the Boro pressure finally telling when Godden collected the ball on the edge of the area from a long pass forward and his shot squirmed under goalkeeper Parish on 71 minutes.

Stevenage stopper Jamie Jones pulled off a superb save to deny John O'Sullivan an equaliser three minutes from time.
